When you still need UK post from overseas

An estimated 5.5 million Britons live abroad, and plenty of UK paperwork follows them: HMRC returns and appeals, DWP and State Pension correspondence, NHS records requests, banks that only accept written instructions, court documents, and landlords or letting agents who expect notice in writing. Posting a letter to the UK from overseas is slow and surprisingly expensive, and if a deadline is running, an envelope spending a week or more in international transit is a risk you do not need to take. Upload the PDF instead and your letter starts its journey already inside the UK.

The non-geographic postcode problem

Many UK bodies use postal addresses with no street and no city: just a department name and a special postcode. Foreign postal services and their online forms often reject these addresses outright, because they do not look like a valid destination. A letter posted inside the UK sails through: Royal Mail delivers to all of them as ordinary domestic post.

UK addresses foreign postal systems struggle with

Type the address exactly as it appears on gov.uk or on the letter the organisation sent you.

How it works from abroad

Save your letter as a PDF and upload it from wherever you are. Type the recipient’s UK address (recipient addresses must be in the UK, that is the whole point), choose first or second class, and pay by card via Stripe. Cards issued in any country work, checkout is guest-only with no account, and your PDF is permanently deleted after dispatch. Order before the 3pm UK weekday cutoff and your letter is laser-printed and handed to Royal Mail the same working day. Change of plan? You can cancel free of charge until the letter enters production, straight from your confirmation email.

A one-page letter is £1.79 second class or £2.69first class, cheaper than PostRight’s £2.49 equivalent, and a fraction of what international postage costs once you have found a printer, an envelope and a stamp abroad.

What to include in your letter

Use the UK recipient address exactly as it appears on official letters or on gov.uk: reference numbers, department names and non-geographic postcodes included. Put your own reference (UTR, National Insurance number, account number or case number) at the top, give a contact address or email where you can be reached abroad, and keep a copy of the PDF. You also receive an email confirming the date your letter was handed to Royal Mail, useful when you need to show you responded in time.

Sending from abroad FAQs

Can I pay from outside the UK?+

Yes. Checkout happens on-site by card via Stripe, and cards issued in any country are accepted. You pay in pounds sterling and your card issuer converts at its usual rate. No UK bank account, no UK billing address, no sign-up.

Can PostOwl deliver to addresses outside the UK?+

No. The recipient address must be in the UK. Every letter is printed inside the UK and handed to Royal Mail for domestic first or second class delivery. You can send from anywhere in the world, but only to a UK address.

How do I send a letter to HMRC from abroad?+

Exactly the same way as any other letter: upload your PDF, type the HMRC address as it appears on gov.uk or on the letter HMRC sent you (non-geographic postcodes like BX9 1AS included), and pay by card. The same goes for DWP letters, such as a PIP mandatory reconsideration.

How long does delivery take?+

Order before the 3pm weekday cutoff and your letter is printed and handed to Royal Mail the same working day. From there it travels as ordinary first or second class post. First class is a £0.90 upgrade. Because it is posted inside the UK, there is no international transit time at all.
