When you still need to write to HMRC

Plenty of dealings with HMRC still have to happen — or are safest — by letter: appealing a penalty, replying to a compliance check, complaining about delays, correcting a paper tax return, or writing on behalf of someone who does not use a Government Gateway account. A posted letter also creates a paper trail, which matters when a 30-day appeal window is ticking and you want evidence that you responded in time.

The BX postcode problem

HMRC’s postal addresses are non-geographic: no street, no city, just a department name and a BX postcode. Some online postage tools refuse to accept them. PostOwl accepts any address Royal Mail delivers to, BX postcodes included — type it exactly as it appears on gov.uk or on the letter HMRC sent you.

Common HMRC postal addresses

  • Self AssessmentBX9 1AS
  • Corporation TaxBX9 1AX
  • VAT (written enquiries)BX9 1WR
  • National InsuranceBX9 1AN

Always check gov.uk or your HMRC letter first — addresses vary by tax and by team.

What to include in your letter

Put your reference at the top — Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), National Insurance number or employer PAYE reference, depending on the tax — along with your full name and address. Sign and date the letter where a signature is required, keep a copy of the PDF, and quote any HMRC letter reference you are replying to. Letters without a reference number take longer to reach the right team.

How PostOwl sends it

Save your letter as a PDF and upload it. Type the HMRC address, choose first or second class, and pay by card or Apple Pay — no account, no subscription. Order before the 3pm weekday cutoff and it is laser-printed, enveloped and handed to Royal Mail the same day. A one-page letter costs £1.79 second class or £2.69 first class, and your PDF is deleted after dispatch.

HMRC post FAQs

Which HMRC address should I use?+

It depends on the tax. Common ones: Self Assessment is HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS; Corporation Tax is BX9 1AX; VAT written enquiries are BX9 1WR; National Insurance is BX9 1AN. Always check gov.uk or the letter HMRC sent you, and use the address exactly as shown.

Do I get proof I posted it in time?+

Yes. You receive an email confirming the date your letter was handed to Royal Mail — useful evidence when a 30-day appeal or response deadline is running. For tight deadlines, first class post is a £0.90 upgrade.

Is it safe to send tax documents through PostOwl?+

Your PDF is used only to print the letter and is permanently deleted from our servers after dispatch. We keep the order record, not the contents. The printed letter travels sealed in an envelope by Royal Mail, like any other post.
